Who’s talking?

Jean-Claude Ruano-Borbalan received his doctorate in Social History from the University of Paris1 Sorbonne in the field of the history of school reforms and governance. At the beginning of his career, he developed a career in higher education, mediation and popularization of social sciences (co-founding and directing for 15 years the magazine Sciences Humaines), in high-level training activities, and in international activities.

He is a professor at the Conservatoire National des Arts et Métiers (CNAM) in Paris where he directs the laboratory of history of techno-sciences in society. He is a member of the management team of the Ecole Doctorale and director of the department/ EPN innovation of the CNAM. He is also responsible for research at the Michel Serres Center for Innovation HESAM. He is a member of the Hastec-PSL labex, the Innovation Research Network, and the Institut Francilien d’innovation en société.

In this context and in continuity with his career, his research work currently focuses on several aspects:

The reality and nature of “intermediate knowledge” in engineering or the mediation/transfer of knowledge, which has developed since the Renaissance and has been particularly reinforced in the contemporary period

The processes and techniques of knowledge legitimization:

In the long term, in a vision of socio-anthropology of knowledge

In the contemporary period, in a socio-historical vision within the ecosystems of mediation of science and technology and within the university and academic research systems and higher education in international comparison. In particular, he is developing research on the socio-history of (pluri) disciplinary traditions centered on the project (and more recently on innovation or creativity). In this context, he has been studying for several years, in collaboration with others, the emergence of multidisciplinary training through projects (design schools or innovation programs) and the convergence between active pedagogy traditions and contemporary visions of techno-scientific knowledge transfer.

Analysis of public research and innovation policies: development of framing and standardization of the construction of legitimate knowledge, in the major national research and innovation strategies.

The processes of creation and definition of innovation doctrines (managerial or engineering discourses)

Analysis of the transformation of institutions of production and transfer of scientific knowledge (entrepreneurial and innovation universities/scientific laboratories/transfer systems and agencies: SNRI)

Jean Claude Ruano-Borbalan has been a visiting professor at several universities in the French Community of Wallonia-Brussels, including the University of Leuven, where he taught at the Master’s level socio-politics and the construction of values, citizenship and transformations of authority.
